Why Some PCBs’ Vias Need to be Plugged?

Do you know why some PCB need to be plugged? In some projects, in order to meet the requirements of customers, the circuit board via holes must be plugged. After a lot of practice, the factory changed the traditional aluminum plugging process, using white mesh to complete the solder mask and plugging of the circuit board. This is not only stable in production, but also reliable in quality.

Via hole plays the role of wire interconnection and conduction. The continuous development of the electronics industry also promotes the development of PCB, and also puts forward higher requirements on PCB manufacturing technology and SMT processing technology. Via hole plugging technology came into being, and should meet the following requirements:

1. It is sufficient if there is copper in the via. Solder mask can be plugged or not plugged;

2. There must be tin-lead in the via hole, and there must be a certain thickness (4 microns), and no solder mask ink should enter the hole, otherwise it will cause tin beads to be hidden in the hole;

3. The via hole must have the following requiremens: there are solder mask ink plug holes, opaque, no tin, flat, etc.

With the development of electronic products in the direction of "light, thin, short and small", PCBs have also developed to high density and high difficulty, so a large number of SMT and BGA PCBs have appeared, When the customers need to plugg hole when mounting components, there are 5 main functions:

1. Prevent the tin from penetrating the component surface from the via hole to cause short circuit when the PCB is over wave soldering;

2. Avoid flux residue in the vias;

3. After the SMT processing and component assembly are completed in the electronics factory, the PCB must be vacuumed on the testing machine to form a negative pressure;

4. Prevent surface solder paste from flowing into the hole, causing false soldering and affecting placement;

Prevent the tin balls from popping up during wave soldering, causing short circuits.
